How to Install Tape Weft Hair Extensions

Tape Weft extensions are great if you want to lengthen your hair or go for a highlights/balayage look. They are for those who want longer lasting hair extensions than clip ins, and are relatively simple to put in. They do not require special heat tools, so they can be applied at home without the assistance of a stylist. Tape Weft extensions can last around 2 months in the hair depending on the growth on the natural hair.

Step 1:

Wash your hair. Extensions will last longer if you apply them to clean hair. Before install your extensions, wash and dry your hair as you normally would.

Step 2:

Make a part across your scalp. About 2 inches from the nape of your neck, use a rat tail comb to make a horizontal part. You will apply the extensions near the line made by the part.

Step 3:

Clip up the top hair. You can use a hair tie or hair clips to secure all the hair above the part line. Make sure it's completely secured as you don't want any hair falling down and getting caught inside the tape.

Step 4:

Measure the section. Hold the tape weft extension up to the part line and measure the length of the section. Be sure to leave out at least a 1/2 inch of natural hair on both sides of the section to hide the extensions. Then cut two pieces the size of this section. Do this for every section

Step 5:

Section out a thin portion of your hair from the non-clipped part. You will be sandwiching this section of hair between top and bottom extensions. The strand of hair you're sandwiching needs to be very thin, about 1⁄8 inch (0.32 cm). This is so the adhesive tape on both extensions can stick together through the hair. However, too little hair will cause tension from the heavy weight of the extensions. Refer to the photos for reference.

Step 6:

Attach the first extension piece under the thin portion of hair. Remove the tab covering the adhesive on the extension. Take your strand of hair and lift it up. Hold the extension underneath the natural hair and 2 millimeters down from the part line. Press the natural hair onto the adhesive, evenly spreading out the natural hair. Make sure the extension and the natural hair lay flat to the head.
